The Somerset Spacewalk
It takes 140,000 years to walk the 3.7 billion miles from the Sun to Pluto — without stopping for a pasty at the services.
On this walk, I attempt the entire journey in a single morning along the Somerset Space Walk, following a scale model of our Solar System beside the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal.
Along the way, the enormous scale of space meets some much smaller things — feathers, water droplets, dandelion seeds and the ordinary details that are easy to walk straight past.
Behind the Film
The Somerset Space Walk is a scale model of our Solar System running alongside the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal. The distances between the planets are scaled down, but the vastness of space is still surprisingly difficult to get your head around.
Rather than simply walking from planet to planet, I wanted to use the journey to look at the things around me too. A feather, a dandelion seed head, reflections on the water and small details in the landscape became part of the journey.
There are also a few detours along the way — including a little Douglas Adams, because any journey to Pluto needs a passing reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Sometimes the best way to understand something enormous is to stop and look at something very small.
